Program Description
Alfred University offers a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in School Counseling. The Certificate is designed to be a “bridge program” for individuals who have already earned a master’s degree in counseling, but do not meet the required coursework and experience for School Counseling Certification.

Eligible Degrees are:
Master’s in Mental Health Counseling
Individuals who successfully complete this approved program meet the requirements that make them eligible for the NYS Certification in School Counseling.
The 21-credit CASMHC consists of 5 classroom courses (15 credits) and 6 credits of internship. The internship must be done in a school setting and and consist of 300 hours at the Elementary School/Middle School Level and 300 at the High School level. An additional 100 hours of practicum may be done at either level.
Application Requirements and Procedures
The following items are required as part of the application process:

- Two Letters of recommendation.
- Cover letter / Resume
- Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts
- Interview with a faculty member
- Personal Statement (You must submit a written statement describing career goals and reasons for the chosen field of graduate study. Outline topics of special interest and also include relevant experience such as internships, co-ops, or other professional activities.)
Financial Information
The fee for each three-credit course is $1,335. The complete cost for the 21-credit Certificate of Advanced Study is $9,345. Financial aid is available through Alfred University. A $200 enrollment deposit is due upon acceptance into the program. This deposit is refundable upon successful completion of the program. Cost of books, E-Portfolio subscriptions and campus visits are not included in the cost of tuition.
Convenient Schedule
Courses are offered fully synchronous online on Saturdays and/or Sundays during the school year. Please see the posted schedule for full program dates.
Course Transfers
Alfred University may accept up to 3 graduate credits for transfer into the program. University policy dictates that no more than 20% of total credits required for graduation can be considered. All coursework must correspond to the coursework in the program because course requirements are mandated by New York State. Student must earn a grade of B or better and the courses must be taken at the graduate level. Acceptance of transfer credits is at the sole discretion of the program director. Students that accept transfer credits may fall below the 6 credit minimum for receiving federal financial aid for that semester.
